Hermes Agent: A Safer, Self-Learning AI Assistant Compared to OpenClaw

Recently, I looked into Hermes Agent and found that it’s indeed more user-friendly and secure than OpenClaw.

Here’s the conclusion upfront: After OpenClaw was exposed to multiple critical vulnerabilities in succession, even though I had previously tested it, I no longer trusted it. As a result, I needed an alternative in the same category.

After some research, I chose Hermes Agent as the new AI assistant.

As an open-source project, it’s essential to examine its foundational data. Hermes Agent’s metrics are quite impressive—arguably second only to OpenClaw.

However, from a comprehensive perspective, OpenClaw has several red flags, such as security vulnerabilities and supply chain risks, which are so severe that they are almost unacceptable.

In summary, while OpenClaw, as a pioneer, once held a significant advantage, repeated vulnerabilities and disruptive updates have greatly eroded user trust. Meanwhile, Hermes Agent has shown strong momentum in catching up.

After some experimentation, I successfully deployed Hermes Agent, again choosing Feishu as the communication channel. For the AI model, I opted for
deepseek-v4-pro
, which offers good cost-performance.

Here are a few handy tips:

Hermes Agent supports scheduled tasks. To enhance its autonomous learning capability, you can configure it to automatically scan the past 24 hours of conversations every midnight, extract reusable knowledge, and write it to Memory—saving the effort of manual reminders.

Hermes Agent allows separate configuration for vision models. In the
auxiliary.vision.model
field, I set
qwen3.7-plus
, addressing
deepseek-v4-pro
’s lack of multimodal support. Now, even if you send images to Hermes Agent, it can recognize and respond seamlessly.

Additionally, when AI-generated results are lengthy, you can request it to generate a file and send it to you.

Using markdown or docx formats are good options, as they can prevent unsupported markdown formatting characters from appearing in messages.

More details about Hermes Agent will be covered in future articles—stay tuned.

The Momei Blog has officially released version 1.19.0. Below are some screenshots of the new pages and features.

A new Content Calendar feature has been added, making it easier to visualize article publication dates.

A new Content Audit feature has been introduced, providing a clearer view of article ratings.

For more features and pages, you can visit the official website to experience them, or check out screenshots in the previous blog.

We welcome all users to try it out and provide feedback and suggestions.

Moving forward, we will continue developing features according to the roadmap and to-do list, so stay tuned.

Of course, Momei Blog still has many details to refine, and its features are not yet complete. If you have any feedback or suggestions, feel free to raise them in the project’s GitHub issues.

If you’re also interested in Momei Blog, you’re welcome to participate in development and testing.

GitHub Copilot Price Surge

As mentioned in the previous blog “AI Programming Throttling & DeepSeek-V4 Experience with Momei Blog | Caomei Weekly Report Week 19, 2026”, GitHub Copilot was set to update its pricing model starting June 2026, with a significant price increase.

However, I didn’t expect it to be so impractical—just a few tasks over two days completely exhausted the entire Copilot Pro quota.

This confirms that the earlier calculation of a 37x price hike was accurate. (For details, see: “GitHub Copilot’s 37x Price Increase & Free Search MCP | Caomei Weekly Report Week 21, 2026”)

So, during this time, aside from upgrading Copilot to Pro+ (now priced at $39 per month), I’ve also been experimenting more with the combination of OpenCode + DeepSeek-V4-Pro to reduce costs.

Including caching, DeepSeek-V4 can achieve approximately 1 RMB for 11 million tokens, making it a highly cost-effective option overall.

Even though DeepSeek-V4 currently has some gaps compared to GPT-5.4 and Claude Opus 4.6, I am still quite willing to continue using DeepSeek-V4.

GitHub Copilot Price Surges 37x

The issue of throttling and price increases for multiple coding plans, including GitHub Copilot, was mentioned in last week’s “AI Programming Throttling & DeepSeek-V4 Experience with Momei Blog | 2026 Week 19 Caomei Weekly Report”. Now, let’s talk about exactly how much GitHub Copilot’s price has risen.

GitHub has released a new page to compare pricing changes before and after the billing model update: Copilot Billing Preview.

After downloading the CSV file from your billing page, upload it to this page.

Then, wait for a while, download the CSV from the email, and upload it to Copilot Billing Preview.

Here’s a look at my personal Copilot bill from last month. As you can see, under the new billing model, the cost would skyrocket from $14.22 to nearly $530—an increase of about 37.27 times.

At this rate, the previous expense of approximately $22.25 in March could rise to around $829.32!

It’s clear that even GitHub can no longer sustain the rising costs of Copilot and has opted for a significant price hike.

After the price increase, I might switch to other more affordable AI models (like DeepSeek) or Coding Plan, keeping Copilot as a backup option—after all, a monthly expense of $500 is unsustainable for anyone.

Free Search MCP

When using AI tools, I’ve often encountered a problem: the lack of a search API-supported MCP.

After all, large AI models themselves don’t have the capability to fetch information and rely on search engines to solve problems.

So, I did some research recently and found that TinyFish offers free search and fetch APIs.

The quotas are quite generous, supporting 30 searches and 150 fetches per minute, which should be sufficient for individual users (if higher frequency is needed, consider the paid version).

However, the official MCP still requires payment, so I built an additional layer on top of the free search and fetch APIs to create an MCP—the tinyfish-mcp project.

tinyfish-mcp is an MCP (Model Context Protocol) service based on TinyFish’s free search API, supporting both Stdio and HTTP transmission methods.

The Stdio mode is recommended for personal development and can be integrated as follows:

{
  "mcpServers": {
    "tinyfish-search": {
      "command": "npx",
      "args": ["-y", "tinyfish-mcp"],
      "env": {
        "TINYFISH_API_KEY": "<your-api-key>"
      }
    }
  }
}

HTTP mode is recommended for team sharing. The integration steps are as follows.

# 1. Create a .env file
cat > .env << EOF
TINYFISH_API_KEY=<your-api-key>
AUTH_TOKEN=<your-auth-token>
EOF

# 2. Start the service
npx -y tinyfish-mcp-server
# The service runs at http://localhost:3000

Configure in the MCP client:

{
  "mcpServers": {
    "tinyfish-search": {
      "url": "http://localhost:3000/mcp",
      "headers": {
        "Authorization": "Bearer <your-auth-token>"
      }
    }
  }
}

For more details on usage and deployment, refer to the project documentation, which will not be reiterated here.

A Lesson Learned from Exceeding Database Quota

A few days ago, I suddenly noticed that the Momei Blog was inaccessible. After checking the logs, I found the error:
Your project has exceeded the data transfer quota. Upgrade your plan to increase limits.
In other words, the database usage had exceeded its quota.

The project was previously using Neon’s free database (Neon), which has a monthly traffic limit of 5GB. Since the Momei Blog handles a relatively large amount of data transfer, it quickly exceeded the limit.

The most immediate consequence of exceeding the database quota was that the database became inaccessible, which directly caused the Momei Blog to go down.

When I tried to upgrade to a paid plan, I ran into another issue: Vercel doesn’t support UnionPay cards. After struggling for days, I finally resolved the problem by applying for a Visa card.

Here are a few key lessons I learned from this experience:

Free databases are convenient, but you must monitor usage closely—otherwise, you might only realize the problem after exceeding the quota.

Always maintain off-site backups of your database to avoid being unable to recover quickly in case of downtime (this was the most painful lesson).

Opt for a stable database solution, whether it’s a one-time payment or pay-as-you-go. Paid plans generally offer better reliability (and better SLAs) than free versions.

However, after estimating, the paid version would cost an extra $10 per month, which isn’t a trivial amount.

Since the database usage isn’t extremely high yet, the next step is to optimize traffic consumption and then switch back to the Free plan to reduce costs.

For database backups, you can refer to auto-backup-database. It now supports backups for SQLite, MongoDB, PostgreSQL, MySQL, and more, with both local and remote (OSS) backup options.

Some Thoughts on AI Programming

Recently, I optimized the AI workflow for the Momei Blog project.

My experience is that code reviews are genuinely useful, so I added a Code Auditor Agent specifically to audit any changes to code, documentation, or configurations—letting the AI review its own modifications.

Of course, an even better approach is to use different AI models for cross-reviewing to avoid the limitations of a single AI model (though the cost would also double).

Additionally, whenever there are new requirements or changes, the Product Manager Agent organizes the to-do list, and the Full Stack Master handles the actual code modifications.

However, I believe the foundation still lies in linting, type checking, and testing. Adding reviews on top of these ensures the quality of every code change.

AI programming has increased code output speed tenfold, but it has also accelerated bug generation at the same rate. As a result, stricter code quality control is now essential to ensure project code quality.
